Reetha, also called aritha or soapnut, commonly refers to the fruit of Sapindus mukorossi. Its fruit contains high levels of saponins, naturally occurring compounds with surfactant-like cleansing properties. When reetha is soaked, boiled, or extracted into water, those compounds can help lift oil and soil from the hair and scalp. It is frequently paired with shikakai in traditional herbal cleansers. Because reetha is an effective cleanser, more is not automatically better. How a botanical cleanser affects textured hair depends on concentration, formulation, frequency, and the condition of the hair fiber.
