Scalp oil level describes how much natural sebum accumulates on the scalp and how that oil behaves between washes. Sebum is produced by sebaceous glands associated with hair follicles and helps lubricate the scalp and hair. How oily or dry the hair feels depends not only on oil production but also on how effectively that sebum travels away from the scalp and along the strand. Research has directly measured differences in the way sebum spreads along human hair fibers.

Hair with pronounced curls and coils can make the movement of natural oil down the length of the strand more difficult. As a result, someone can experience oil or buildup near the scalp while the lengths and ends remain comparatively dry.

Coded Coil therefore considers scalp oil level and strand moisture separately instead of assuming that an oily scalp means moisturized hair.
