Strand thickness refers to the diameter or cross-sectional size of an individual hair fiber. In everyday hair care, strands are commonly described as fine, medium, or coarse, although actual fiber diameter exists on a continuum rather than in three perfectly defined groups.

Strand thickness is distinct from both density and curl pattern. Someone can have fine individual strands but a very high number of them, or coarse strands at lower density. Fiber dimensions also contribute to the hair's mechanical behavior and influence how substantial or delicate an individual strand may feel. Research demonstrates substantial variation in hair-fiber dimensions and morphology between individuals, reinforcing the value of evaluating these characteristics separately.
