Amla is the fruit of Phyllanthus emblica, also known by the older botanical name Emblica officinalis and commonly called Indian gooseberry. In Ayurvedic hair care, the dried fruit powder or infused oil is traditionally used in scalp treatments, herbal masks, and hair oils. Amla contains polyphenols and other antioxidant compounds, and traditional formulations have long used it as a hair tonic. Laboratory and formulation-based research has explored its potential effects on hair follicles and scalp health, but claims that amla alone reliably causes human hair growth should be treated cautiously because clinical evidence remains limited.
